5 Things That Make a Fall Table Feel Special

Fall is probably my favorite season for gathering. The light gets softer, candles come out earlier, and staying around the table a little longer just feels right.

You don’t need much to make it feel special. These are my five.

1. Something from outside

A few branches, herbs from the garden, little pears, figs, even something you found on a walk. Fall already did most of the work for us. Bring a little of it to the table.

2. Lots of candlelight

My forever answer.

Mix tapers with little votives, don't worry too much about matching, and turn off the overhead lights. Instant magic.

3. Something imperfect

Wrinkled linen. Handmade pottery. Flowers that aren't sitting exactly where they're supposed to.

A table feels better when it doesn't feel too perfect.

4. Something with meaning

This can be tiny: a handwritten name card, a little hamsa tucked into the setting, a sprig of rosemary, or something collected on a trip.

I love adding one detail that has a story behind it. Even if you're the only one who knows the story.

5. Something delicious in the middle

Bread on a wooden board. A big salad. A beautiful cake. A bowl of fruit.

Food is part of the table, too. Let it be abundant, messy and shared.

That's it.

Five little things. Nothing complicated.

Because the best tables aren't necessarily the most beautiful ones. They're the ones nobody wants to leave.

The art of gathering well. It’s all in the little things.
